Chapter 2: 9 Tips to become proficient in al-Qur’an. |

Tips # 6: To measure the reality to al-Qur’an and not vice versa.
When studying al-Qur’an, we will come to verses promising the Muslims as the excellent people, successful and victorious. Unfortunately, in reality, the Muslims are so far from those promises; in fact, they are most humiliated and their lives are worthless. These facts become a question mark, how are those promises in al-Qur’an as compared to the reality of the present time? Definitely reality holds the truth; then, is al-Qur’an incorrect?
The answer; reality and al-Qur’an are both correct. What is wrong is the way we measure al-Qur’an with reality whereas what right is that the reality should be measured to al-Qur’an. This is because we know about reality through what is apparent to us. Somehow, when we measure the reality to al-Qur’an, we will know the fact behind it.
For example, the reality that the Muslims are now being humiliated and killed everywhere can be measured to al-Qur’an as the following. As Allah says:
And Allah did indeed fulfil His Promises to you when you were killing them (your enemy) with His Permission; until (the moment) you lost your courage and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed after he showed you (of the booty) which you love.
Among you are some that desire this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then He made you flee from them (your enemy), that He might test you. But surely, He forgave you, and Allah is Most gracious to the believers. [Ali Imran 3:152]
The above verse tells us the fact when the Muslims were defeated in the battle of Uhud. In the battle, many of the Muslims soldier radhiallahu 'anhum died and even Rasulullah sallahu ‘alaihi wassalam was injured. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala explains that initially He promised to give victory to the Muslims. However, when the Muslims had no courage to fight, disputing with one another, disobeying the instruction - prohibition of Rasulullah sallahu ‘alaihi wassalam, and wanting the worldly benefits, Allah no longer promise them victory.
Now let us measure the reality of the Muslims at present to the verse above:
Most of the Muslims today, are not determines in defending their religion nor are they following and obeying the Sunnah of Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi Wassalam. At the same time, the Muslims at present are focusing on their disputes and fight with each other, and utilising the remainder of their time to gain the worldly benefits. Yet, whose fault is it when the Muslims today are humiliated and killed? The answer is in al-Qur’an:
(What is the matter with you?) When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: “From where does this come to us?” Say (to them), “It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds).” And Allah has power over all things. [Ali Imran 3:165]
In the above example we have measured the reality to al-Qur’an. This way, we will find the answer to the cause of the reality. By understanding the cause, we could try to correct it and avoid the same reality from being repeated.
Thus, once again reality should be measured to al-Qur’an. This way, we will come to know the cause of the reality and then try to change the reality by changing the cause. On the other hand if we were to measure al-Qur’an to the reality, we will end up by questioning the truthfulness of al-Qur’an. When al-Qur’an is being questioned, we will not be able to gain the benefit from it especially its role in changing the reality.
