Chapter 2: 9 Tips to become proficient in al-Qur’an.

Tips # 1: Have the desire to study al-Qur’an

Attitude plays an important role to determine whether a person will be successful in getting what he desires. If we already have the positive attitude, it can be considered that half of what we wish for is already obtained. The rest is to express this attitude into actions (efforts and endeavors). This is not new as Allah Azza wa Jalla has declared in al-Qur’an:

Verily, Allah will not change (good) condition of a people

as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves.

[ar-Ra’d 13:11]

As for example, our attitude will differentiate whether we want to take al-Qur’an as our guidance or otherwise. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala explains this difference:

Then if there comes to you guidance from Me,

then whoever follows My Guidance he shall neither go astray, nor shall be distressed.

But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur’an nor acts on its teachings) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.

He will say: “O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had (sight) before.”

Allah will say: “Like this: Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them and you turned away from them),

and so this Day, you will be neglected (in the Hell-fire, away from Allah’s Mercy).”

[Ta-Ha 20:123-126]

As it is, the role of al-Qur’an that “brings you out of darkness to the light” depends on our attitude whether we are interested to use al-Qur’an as a guidance which will give light to us or otherwise. Allah Tabara wa Ta’ala reminds:

O mankind! Verily, there has come to you a convincing proof (Prophet Muhammad sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) from you Lord; and We sent down to you a manifest light (this Qur’an).

So, as for those who believed in Allah and held fast to Him,

He will admit them to His Mercy and Grace (i.e. Paradise), and guide them to Himself by the Straight Path.

[al-Nisa 4:174-175]

Not forgetting, the choice of accepting al-Qur’an as the distinguisher between the truth and falsehood is up to our own attitude. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:

(And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves,

refer it to Allah and His Messenger (sallAllahu wa sallam), if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day.

That is better and more suitable for final determination.

[al-Nisa’ 4:59]

In short, studying al-Qur’an will only be beneficial if we have the positive attitude towards it. Thus the first guideline is to change and amend our attitude towards studying al-Qur’an. If we have a negative attitude hence we should seek the cause.

Among the major causes is we ourselves do not know al-Qur’an so much so that we are not interested to study it. This factor can be dealt with, as our folks said: “We do not know thus we do not love”. Hence, try to get to know al-Qur’an by studying the verses from any chapters or sections in al-Qur’an. From the first few verses you will fall in love with al-Qur’an and will be interested to check on the next verses.
