Chapter 5: Current mis-interpretation of al-Qur’an.

7. Not observing from whom al-Qur’an came and to whom it is addressed to.[1]

Peculiar but true, some Muslims consider al-Qur’an only as an Arabic literature, written by an Arab for the Arabs suitable for that particular era. They do not regard it as a Book from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, revealed for all human being generally and for Muslims particularly to function as a guide at all time.

A well-known example would be the actions of Islam Liberal writers nowadays who classify hijab as something of “Arabic culture” because Arab women live in deserts so they need to cover their head. According to them, hijab is not a requirement of the deen. These writers are persistent with their opinion though there are verses in al-Qur’an saying:

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and protect their private parts

and not to show off their adornment except which is apparent

and to draw their veils all over their Juyubihinna (i.e their breasts).

[an-Nur 24:31]

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of believers

to draw their cloaks all over their bodies.

That will be better that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed.

And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

[al-Ahzab 33:59]

These writers do not consider the above verses as Allah’s command, rather as an Arab literature. They do not consider the verse addressed to all …believing women…”, rather they see it addressed to Arab women 1400 years ago. They do not observe the benefit of covering as …should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed…, rather they see the benefit of covering as a screen against the desert sand.[2]
