Chapter 5: Current mis-interpretation of al-Qur’an.

8. Assuming certain religious queries is not covered by al-Qur’an.

Among the current and easiest trend of mis-interpretation is to claim that certain religious queries is not covered by al-Qur’an. These assertions include claims like “In this issue, there is no clear rule in al-Qur’an”, “There is a difference of opinion regarding the matter because al-Qur’an does not discuss it completely.” After convincing the public that the matter is not discussed in al-Qur’an, they would then put forth their own opinion. This implies that al-Qur’an is merely a blank book allowing anybody to make any note in it to support his or her view. On the contrary, al-Qur’an is a complete book as Allah says:

Certainly, we have brought to them a Book (the Qur’an) which We have explained in detail with knowledge

– a guidance and a mercy to people who believe.

[al-‘Araaf 7:52]

We have neglected nothing in the Book (Al-Quran).

[al-An’aam 6:38]

The completeness of al-Qur’an is not like an encyclopedia that explains in details each matter. Rather it has basic guidelines to help us face various situations in life. Some of these guidelines are mentioned specifically in al-Qur’an while others are detailed out by Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi Wasallam. In addition, some other guidelines are linked by way of analogy (qiyas) by the Muslim scholars.

For example, some people claiming it is not discussed in al-Qur’an decline the punishment of the grave. Actually Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has said that:

…while an evil torment encompassed Firaun’s people.

The Fire, they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon.

And on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels):

“Cause Firaun’s people to enter the severest torment!”

[al-Mukmin 40:45-46]

In His verse above, Allah explains that Pharaoh and his people will suffer two punishments. First they would be exposed to the fire morning and and afternoon. Secondly they would enter the fire itself (severest torment). The first sentence is the punishment of the grave because:

  1. It happens before the Hour (end of day) since Allah distinguished it from …And on the Day when the Hour will be established ….

  2. It does not continue after the Hour because there is no morning or afternoon after the Resurrection Day.

Eventhough the above verse refers to Pharaoh and his people, the lesson from the verse is general; there will be punishment in the grave for those who deserve it. So when you hear another claim that al-Qur’an does not discuss the issue, beware that it is just an easy way out to mis-interpret al-Qur’an. Al-Qur’an never runs out of guidance or light to shed on any issue that arises.
