Chapter 1: Acquainting with al-Qur’an. |
|
1. al-Qur’an is the guide for people of taqwa
Alif-Lam-Mim. This is the Book (al-Qur’an) whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are al-Muttaqun. [al-Baqarah 2:1-2]
In the above verses Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala explains that al-Qur’an functions as “guidance”. Let’s imagine ourselves in a busy foreign city and we’re lost. There seems to be a lot of path. Which one should we take? Which one would be the correct path? How should we know? We would have to depend on signs and guides to help ensure that we will arrive at our destination safely.
This would be the exact role of al-Qur’an. It serves as a guide to show us the shortest, easiest and safest path to arrive at our destination in life. Without the guidance from al-Qur’an we would be taking various paths that may lead us astray.
Notice that Allah explains that al-Qur’an is a guide for the Muttaqun. Briefly taqwa means fearing Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. This fear however would not draw us far from Allah rather it would ensure that we abstain from all the sins and evil deeds that Allah has forbidden and obey all His commands in order to find His blessings. As a consequence from taqwa we would be closer and more beloved to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. We would be able to achieve taqwa with the guide of al-Qur’an.
