Chapter 1: Acquainting with al-Qur’an.

4. al-Qur’an is the “spirit” that gives life

And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruh of Our Command.

[as-Syura 42:52]

There are a few interpretations of the word “Ruh” in the above verse. Most of the scholars interpret it as something that gives life to the human spirit. As we know human being consists of two elements; physical body and spirit. If we consume material items (food, drink etc) in order to keep our body running, then we need al-Qur’an to give life to our spirit. If medicine functions as cure for physical sickness then al-Qur’an heals the unhealthy spirit. This is mentioned in the verse below:

O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord

(i.e the Qur’an, enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil)

and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences) which is in your breasts

- a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things) for the believers.

[Yunus 10:57]

A lively spirit is a fulfillment of life. Humans have long focused on physical need of the body. Eventually they realized that the spiritual part of the body has been ignored all this while. Without a lively spirit the physical body feels lame; almost dead - even if it is adorned with infinite material inputs.

Humans have experimented thousand of formulas to heal and give life to the spirit. However all those formulas have its deficiencies. It may work for certain individuals but may fail for others. It may proof successful under certain conditions yet fail badly in other situations. The results are almost always short term in nature. Even worse all these formulas are based on trial and error attempts.

In addition, these formulas are sometimes originated with the intention to fulfill the material needs of the “discoverer”. Just observe the growth of the so called “healing of the soul” programs. It bestows the founders with high returns!

The main factor contributing to the deficiencies of these formulas are the founders themselves. They themselves are mere human being that is experiencing the death of the spirit. There is nothing that could heal the spirit except the prescription by the creator of human being Himself. Only al-Qur’an could heal and revitalise the human spirit!
